MAGNIFICENT 7 TRAIL SYSTEM
PROPOSAL TO THE BLM BY TRAIL MIX
YOU CAN HELP!!!
WRITE A LETTER OR SEND AN EMAIL TO THE BLM SUGGESTING THE ISSUES AND WHY THIS TRAIL IS AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF NON-MOTORIZED RECREATION.
USE YOUR OWN WORDS AND IDEAS, BUT HERE ARE SOME SAMPLES:
*FUN…ENJOYABLE…BEAUTIFUL….SCENIC….EPIC RIDE OR LONG RIDE,
CHALLENGING …CLEAN AIR NON MOTORIZED RECREATION.
*PROVIDES MORE SINGLETRACK TRAILS IN GRAND COUNTY/THE MOAB AREA.
*THE TRAILS WILL PROVIDE MORE ADVANCED-INTRMEDIATE SINGLETRACK.
*THE TRAILS WILL BE GOOD FOR THE GRAND COUNTY ECONOMY.
*THE TRAIL SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE MORE BUSINESS FOR SHUTTLE OPERATORS.
*THE TRAIL SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE MORE BUSINESS FOR TOUR OPERATORS AND GUIDES.
*THE NEW PROPOSED MAG 7 – BULL RUN TRAIL-HEAD AND ENTRY THAT IS DIRECTLY OFF OF THE GEMINI BRIDGES ROAD, RESOLVES THE CONFLICT OF CYCLISTS AND BIG HORN SHEEP IN THE UPPER BULL CANYON AREA OF THE ORIGINAL GREEN DOT TRAIL. THE NEW ROUTE IS STILL ALONG A VERY BEAUTIFUL CANYON AND EVENTUALLY REJOINS THE BULL CANYON RIM BEYOND THE SHEEP MIGRATION ZONE.
*THE PROPOSED MAGNIFICENT SEVEN TRAIL SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE A SECOND “EPIC RIDE” THAT WILL GIVE CYCLISTS A CHOICE BETWEEN THE WHOLE ENCHILADA AND THE MAG 7 TRAIL SYSTEMS, THEREFORE DISPERSING RIDERS ONTO TWO TRAILS.
*THE MAG 7 SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE MORE SINGLETRACK OFF OF THE POPULAR 4X4 ROADS LIKE GEMINI BRIDGES ROAD AND GOLD BAR RIM 4X4, THEREFORE, EASING CONFLICTS BETWEEN MOTORIZED AND NON MOTORIZED USERS.
*SEVERAL OF THE TRAILS MAY BE RIDDEN IN A VARIETY OF COMBINATIONS THAT COULD RETURN TO THE GEMINI BRIDGES ROAD, THEREBY PROVIDING OPTIONS BESIDES DOING THE WHOLE MAG 7 RIDE FROM HWY 313 ALL THE WAY TO THE POTASH ROAD, HWY 279. EXAMPLES WOULD BE COMBINING THE ARTH’S CORNER WITH THE LITTLE CANYON CUTOFF.
*THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN TRAIL SYSTEM INCLUDES PORTIONS OF THE TRAIL FORMERLY KNOWN AS LOWER BLUE DOT OR GOLD BAR SINGLETRACK THAT BRINGS THE RIDER ALMOST TO THE GOLD BAR RIM. THIS TRAIL SEGMENT HAS BEEN RIDDEN FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS. IN THOSE YEARS THE BIG HORN SHEEP HAVE NICELY CO-EXISTED WITH CYCLISTS, THEREFORE THIS IS REALLY NOT A NEW TRAIL. THE TRAIL WAS NOT DESIGNATED IN THE 2008 BLM RMP (RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PLAN). THE MAG 7 – GOLD BAR SINGLETRACK TRAIL SEGMENT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN ITS ENTIRETY TO THE RIM. PLEASE DO NOT OMIT THE TRAIL SEGMENT THAT LEADS TO THE RIM.
SEND LETTERS TO:
BLM Moab Field Office – Attention Katie Stevens
82 E. Dogwood Ave. Moab, Ut. 84532
EMAIL KATIE STEVENS: katie_stevens@blm.gov
THE MAG 7 SYSTEM PROPOSAL DOES NOT INCLUDE THE UPPER BLUE DOT RIM TRAIL IN THIS PROPOSAL. ONCE THE GOLD BAR SINGLE TRACK TRAIL REACHES THE GOLD BAR RIM, THE ROUTE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE GOLDEN SPIKE 4X4 ROAD TOWARDS POISON SPIDER OR THE PORTAL, EXITING ON THE POTASH ROAD, HWY 279. Trail Mix would like to propose an alternate single track route to the illegal Blue Dot Rim Trail that would be close to the rim, but acceptable to the BLM, wildlife, bikers, hikers and environmentalists. If you have ideas please contact someone at Trail Mix. Sandy Freethey, Scott Escott, Jeff Van Horn or others.
News from the Pepper
by Administrator on Oct.14, 2010, under News From The Bike Shop
Last weekend was the 24 Hours of Moab race located at Behind the Rocks south of Moab. Once again our staff had a great time supporting the event and the racers. The mechanics had a busy 24 hours of work, seeing everything from simple cable and housing replacements to broken chains and brake bleeds. At one point late in the night we even had a racer who lost all of his rear rotor bolts in mile #3. He finished the lap with a true floating brake system as his rotor spun free, no longer attached to the wheel.

Chile Pepper Bike Shops 24 hour home.

Todd getting his wings for the night of wrenching.
We also launched our partnership with Go Pro cameras. A representative from Go Pro was present at our tent with cameras and accessories for sale. He had a TV to check out some amazing footage shot with the camera. The quality of video from such a small device is incredible. We will be selling Go Pro cameras at the shop in Moab, so stop by to check them out. Video footage is the best way to relive your epic Moab bike rides.
Speaking of epic Moab rides, the weather has been perfect for riding, allowing riders to start high up into the mountains and finish at the desert floor. October is the rare time in Moab when you can ride so many of our trails on the same trip to town. Everything from the Whole Enchilada, to Moonlight Meadows, to Amasa Back and Slickrock. So, if you don’t want to give up riding in shorts and short sleeve shirts, come to Moab and swing by our shop to get the low-down on trails to ride and to say hello.
News from the Pit: 24 Hours of Moab Location
by Administrator on Oct.06, 2010, under News From The Bike Shop
For the 24 Hours of Moab race, the Chile Pepper will be taking our act on the road and setting up a remote location out at Behind the Rocks south of Moab. We will be staffing our 24 Hours of Moab race location with 2 mechanics around the clock this weekend. We will be stocking the tent site with all sorts of race day necessities. Everything from energy food and warm clothes to parts for repairing and upgrading your ride will be available. Our shop in town (702 S Main St.) will still have a full staff of mechanics during business hours 8-6 throughout the weekend.
The last few years at the race have been loads of fun for our staff. A chance to get out of the shop and work a race scene with an exciting feel. The 24 Hours of Moab is like no other race, as the desert can do a number on bikes and athletes. We provide quick turnaround service on repairs, stock a trailer full of parts at the site, and have the resources to bring parts from town when we switch out staff.

So if you need any parts or service done on your ride, swing by our tent. Or, if you just want to relax after or before laps, we enjoy meeting the racers and hanging out, especially through the late night hours. See you at the race.
News from the Pepper: Outerbike
by Administrator on Oct.01, 2010, under News From The Bike Shop
Outerbike is in full swing. The companies have set up a small city at the Moab Brands trails. Shuttles are running daily from there to various other trail heads allowing consumers to test out the newest bikes on some of Moab’s best trails.

Norco Bikes and Marin are both present at Outerbike with some of their 2011 bikes. We will have bikes from both companies in our spring rental fleet.

Here at the Chile Pepper we will be bringing in for spring rental the Marin Mount Vision XM7 which is available to test at Outerbike. I took the XM8 for a spin yesterday and had a blast. Quick and agile complete with Shimano’s new 3X10 gearing and 140mm of travel.

From Norco next spring we will be renting the much anticipated Norco Range 1 and full suspension Shinobi 29er. The Range is a perfect Moab bike with 160 mm of travel front and rear and a 66.5 degree head tube angle. The new 142mm rear hub and thru axle design make this bike very stiff and stable, not only a rental for Moab but soon to be local Moab riders go to bike.

The Shinobi will be our first full suspension 29er for rent. With 140mm of travel in front and 120mm in back. We have heard the request for full suspension 29ers from people coming to town and in the spring you will be able to rent this ripper and get your big wheel fix.

So as October begins here in Moab start making your plans to visit. This next month will be the best time to come ride. The mountains are still open for shuttling and the temperatures are down to the low 90’s in the valley. It is that rare time of year when you can enjoy riding at 11,000 feet without snow and down at 4,000 feet without extreme heat. Pack up your camping gear and head our way. Stop in the shop for ride recommendations, shuttle options, or just to say hello.
